Request for Proposals: CEO CLER Innovation Grants Program

The CEO Clinical Learning Environment (CEO-CLER) Innovation Grants Program is sponsored by the Cambridge Health Alliance Senior Leadership Team, the Center for Professional and Academic Development and the Graduate Medical Education Committee

Initially funded by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, with continued support from our CHA CEO, the program aims to enlist graduate-level trainees in improving the clinical learning environment at CHA. All graduate level trainees in CHA-sponsored health professional education programs are eligible to apply for a grant up to $2,000 to support initiatives that will make positive change. Applicants who wish to continue a prior CEO CLER project are eligible to apply for a grant up to $1,000 to support the change project. However, new initiatives will be prioritized for funding.

Description: At this webinar participants will have an opportunity to reflect on their experiences evaluating and grading clinical trainees and appraise the influence of cognitive bias in evaluating and grading trainees. Participants will also be introduced to interventions intended to mitigate cognitive bias in evaluation and grading.

The Harvard Medical School Daniel D. Federman Teaching Awards Ceremony includes the the Sandra and Arnold Gold Award for Humanistic Teaching which is presented annually to an inspirational Harvard Medical School (HMS) faculty educator at Cambridge Health Alliance who models compassion, integrity, respect and service in teaching HMS students, residents, fellows or peers. The award was established in 2019 in honor of Drs. Sandra and Arnold Gold and their remarkable decades-long contributions to humanistic medical education nationally and locally.

Goal: The goal of this webinar is to introduce participants to approaches to mitigate cognitive bias in clinical evaluation and grading while having them reflect on their own evaluation and grading practices.

Description: Clinical responsibilities often seem in direct conflict with learner education. This presentation will review three common challenges to clinical education and actionable solutions to these problems.

Objectives: By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
• Identify specific barriers to providing high quality clinical education.
• Choose 2 specific teaching techniques that may improve the efficiency of teaching in the clinical setting.
• Create a plan for improving teaching efficiency that includes at least two specific teaching techniques.

Goal: The goal of this webinar is to help health sciences educators support student’s evolution from novice to expert learners while fostering the activation and integration of knowledge.

Description: This webinar explores the science of learning and discusses how key principles from this important discipline can help medical educators support students’ evolution from novice to expert learners. In particular, the difference between novice and expert learners will be explored and the importance of the development of robust mental schemas will be presented. Finally, the webinar will discuss pedagogical strategies that can help students activate their prior knowledge and then integrate new knowledge into mental schemas.

Objectives: By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

• Differentiate between novice and expert learners.
• Identify the relationship between mental schemas and clinical reasoning.
• Assess the importance of activating prior knowledge in the classroom and clinical settings.
• Describe pedagogical strategies that facilitate the activation of prior knowledge and the integration of new knowledge into mental schemas.
• Formulate how insights from the science of learning can be utilized by faculty to improve pedagogical practices and develop students’ clinical reasoning skills.

HMS Presentation: Getting Promoted from Instructor to Assistant Professor (3:30-5:00 pm Zoom)

Description: This 60-minute presentation, followed by a 30-minute Q&A, provides an overview of the Assistant Professor promotion process for faculty members at the rank of Instructor. Topics include selecting an Area of Excellence and Significant Supporting Activities, evaluation criteria, requirements for the dossier, and the Longer Service pathway. We encourage attendees to review relevant sections of the Faculty of Medicine handbook and/or Promotion Profile Library before arriving to better facilitate engagement and allow more time to ask questions. Sessions are not recorded, please plan accordingly.

Viewing of Portraits in Primary Care Art Exhibition

Sponsored by the CHA Center for Professional & Academic Development, the Portraits in Primary Care art exhibition (April 25-early September) features Artist Lisa Rechtschaffen.

After retiring in 2021 from her 40+ years of practice at CHA, Dr. Lisa Rechtschaffen turned to art. Through her patient portraits she recreates the mutual warmth and admiration that exists between providers and patients. As part of the exhibit, patients will share their stories in accompanying text.
